Loughborough University Training camp 2017

Friday 28th to Monday 1st May the squad will be at Loughborough University attending intense fitness, skills, tactical awareness along with playing fixtures.

An eventful day of the traveling for the squad was to come.   All players arrived at Gibraltar Airport, the plane didn’t!! Due to the adverse weather conditions all planes were diverted to Malaga throughout the day.  It was an eventful start with Hernandez forgetting his passport, a good job Gibraltar is a small place!  With snack bags in hand it was a wet walk across the border to our first form of transport, a coach and soon off to Malaga.  Arriving at Aeropuerto Malaga it was time to check in again and proceed to the gate to board.  Using our second mode of transport, a shuttle bus we were taken to the plane.  With a short wait for a take-off slot it was up, up and away to the U.K.   After a smooth flight, Gatwick welcomed us.  A quick collection of the bags, yet another wait for our connecting coach and we were all off to our Final destination at Loughborough University.  Albeit after a delay of several hours, two additional forms of transport.  The delay caused the squad to reschedule their first fitness session on Friday evening to another day.

The squad have exclusive access over the weekend to the world class hockey facilities that the Sports Faculty has to offer.  This includes video analysis along with individual player monitoring player monitoring facilities.  The support form the Hockey coaching and analysis team meant that coach Zammit could be supported in pre and post match analysis to help enhance the game play to meet the overall objectives.

Loughbrough Town Hockey Club 5 - 6 Gibraltar Development Squad

Goals scored by:

Loughbourough Town: Leo Guy, Ryan Hatley, John Harrison, Pete Flittion and Stephen Hunter.
Gibraltar Development: Karl Lima, Eric Casciaro (2), Kayron Stagno, Julian Lopez and Ryan Gabay.

Match report.

A friendly game with both teams fighting to win.  After action packed halves, the final score respectively shows the determination for the ball to hit the backboard or net.  The local team started off well, putting pressure on the development squad.  With Zammit being supported on the side line by Graham Mansell-Grace (Panda) we soon found our feet and drew.  With great umpiring, Chris Duerden supported Jose well with his decision making, giving tips and pointers both during and at the end of the game.  The second half started with the development squad 3-2 down.  A tactical team talk by Zammit and Panda meant that Ramagge had to steer his troops to play hockey and pass through the opposition.  With time ticking by it was soon 4-4, then in 2 minutes it became 5-4 and 5-5.  With the final 6 minutes left the goal scored by Gabay surely would secure a victory.  Final score 6-5 to the development squad.

The squad have won their first game and are now having lunch.  Carl Christian and David met with Brett, Danny and Panda to look at the video analysis of each of the players.  The players were then shown the videos by Panda and Brett with the areas to develop, these were hot-lining, man to man and transferring.   These identified areas were then incorporated into the practical development sessions during the afternoon with PANDA and his coaching team.

Individual player analysis clips from the game can be found on our Gibraltar Hockey YouTube channel.

The squad were kindly supported by Laura Myers, GB Seniors Development Squad goalkeeper.  Laura has just returned, battered and bruised herself from an intense GB training camp, we thank her for helping Joe Borge and the team in their development session.

What Went Well (WWW) from the day was that it was a focused two hour training session and as a whole package it worked extremely well.  The GHA coaching staff were satisfied as the Loughborough coaching delivered by meeting the objectives. The players started to comprehend the concepts of the '3 seconds' and also being able to make 5 passes to calm the game play down.  Zammit was impressed how the Loughborough coaching staff "brought it back to basics" even though the basics are expected to be know, reiterating this is always good throughout the practices.  As the session developed it was great how the players had started to take ownership and self manage their own training.  Brett said "Really good session today".

Saturday 29th April

A glorious morning ahead as the sun broke through the clouds, albeit a little chilly 10 degrees. The morning session was broken into three focused areas, Active recovery, Ball transfer and possession and Penalty corners.

Games started at 16:30 versus Loughborough University.

Loughborough University 3 - 3 Gibraltar Development Squad

Goals scored by:

Loughborough University: Jonny Dalriuple (2) and Ben Spencer.
Gibraltar Development: Gabriel Benatar, Julian Lopez and Karl Lima.

The development squad on paper faced a tough challenge playing the University. The University fielded a team of players belonging to their 1st to 5th XI squads.  Nearly 40 players showed an interest in representing the University, a team of 16 were selected.

Before the match commenced both teams, officials and supporters obeyed a one minute silence as a mark of respect for the loss of fellow Gibraltarian friends who sadly lost their lives in a car crash in Kent on 29th April
